Rosapenna Golf Resort
(Sandy Hills Links)

Overview

Downings, a charming fishing village on Sheep Haven Bay in northern County Donegal, is home to Rosapenna, one of Ireland’s premier golfing destinations where old meets new. Golf at Rosapenna began in 1891 when Old Tom Morris set up the original course, and it has since evolved through contributions from legends like Harry Vardon, James Braid, and Harry Colt.

After Frank and Hilary Casey acquired Rosapenna in the 1980s, Eddie Hackett redesigned several holes, and later, Pat Ruddy introduced the Sandy Hills course. This stunning layout, carved directly through towering dunes, opened in 2003 and quickly gained recognition. The Sandy Hills course is known for its challenging fairways and greens framed by dramatic dunes, creating a “lunar landscape” with breathtaking views across the bay.

Measuring 7,183 yards with a par of 72, Sandy Hills is a formidable test. Precision is key, as straying off-line leads to tricky lies in the dunes, and many greens are perched on elevated plateaux. Recent renovations by Beau Welling have made Sandy Hills more accessible, including bunker adjustments and a new par five opener.

With further refinements in progress, Rosapenna’s Sandy Hills remains a must-play destination, showcasing how classic courses can evolve while retaining their original magic.
