Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Overview

Royal Birkdale Golf Club, known simply as Birkdale until it received royal patronage in 1951, is celebrated as a quintessential links course and a cornerstone of golf history. Established in 1889 at Shaw Hills, it expanded to 18 holes by 1897 at its current location on Birkdale Hills, designed by George Lowe. The course underwent upgrades to championship standard in the 1930s by F.G. Hawtree and J.H. Taylor, solidifying its reputation as a stern but fair test for golfers of all abilities.

Hosting ten Open Championships, most recently in 2017, Royal Birkdale has witnessed legendary performances from golf icons like Peter Thomson, Arnold Palmer, and more recently, Jordan Spieth. Notably, the 1969 Ryder Cup at Birkdale featured the famous “Concession” by Jack Nicklaus to Tony Jacklin, resulting in the first tied match in Ryder Cup history.

The course is renowned for its expansive dunes and flat-bottomed valleys, providing a natural and challenging landscape. Modifications over the years by Martin Hawtree and others have enhanced its difficulty, including rebuilding greens and adding new tees and bunkers. Birkdale’s signature holes, like the par three 12th and the demanding par four 18th, are etched in golf lore for their strategic challenges and picturesque settings amidst the wind-swept dunes.

Recently announced plans for course enhancements by Mackenzie & Ebert include a new par three 15th hole, alterations to the par four 5th, and improvements to practise facilities, ensuring Royal Birkdale continues to offer a world-class golfing experience while preserving its historic charm and challenge.
