Ardglass Golf Club, nestled along the southeastern coast of Down near the fishing port of Ardglass, offers a stunning golfing experience often overshadowed by nearby Royal County Down. Established in 1896 with a modest 7-hole layout later expanded to 18 holes by 1970, Ardglass boasts a spectacular setting characterised by dramatic elevation changes and breathtaking views of the Irish Sea from every hole.
Renowned for its challenging yet rewarding play, Ardglass features well-tended fairways, tricky pot bunkers, and fast, true greens. Architectural changes in recent years have included replacing three holes to enhance the course’s layout, particularly from the new 9th to 11th holes, maximising its scenic potential.
The course’s standout holes include the memorable cliff-top stretch from the 1st to the 5th holes and signature par threes like the 2nd (“Howd’s Hole”) and the 12th (“Cathlin”), each offering unique challenges against a backdrop of natural beauty.
Ardglass’s clubhouse adds to its allure, housed in a 14th-century castle once home to the Fitzgeralds, Earls of Kildare, fostering a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for golfers to unwind after a day on the links.
Architect Ken Kearney’s ongoing improvements, particularly focusing on bunkers, underscore Ardglass’s commitment to enhancing its reputation as a must-visit destination for golfers seeking both challenge and scenic splendour.
