Lough Erne Golf Resort (Faldo)

Overview

Jim Treacy’s vision for a grand golfing destination began with Castle Hume in Enniskillen, leading to a £30 million, decade-long project culminating in the unveiling of Lough Erne Golf Resort in 2009. Nestled in County Fermanagh, alongside scenic Lough Erne, the resort features a luxurious 5-star accommodation and the centrepiece Nick Faldo-designed championship course spanning over 7,000 yards.

Initially renowned for angling and water sports, Lough Erne now shines as a top golfing destination, poised to host professional tournaments with its world-class facilities. The course challenges golfers with Castle Hume Lough’s wetland areas impacting many holes, emphasising accuracy for scoring well. Strategic par threes like the final hole, “Cygnets Rest,” require a precise short game amidst sand and water hazards.

Notable holes include the dogleg right 2nd, “Forest Drive,” and the 351-yard 10th, featuring a green jutting into the water. The strategic 637-yard 9th and picturesque 16th, “Faldo Turn,” overlooking the estate, stand out among the par fives.

The resort’s competitive debut saw Rory McIlroy edge out Padraig Harrington in “The Duel on the Lough,” a charity match in 2009, marking the course’s arrival on the golfing map with memorable flair.
