Hankley Common Golf Club, nestled on the North Downs, is a gem within a preservation area known as a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’. Its landscape mirrors the fierce heathland character of Walton Heath, featuring sprawling heather and open, windswept vistas akin to seaside links.
Golfing history at Hankley dates back to 1897 with a modest nine-hole layout, later expanded by James Braid in 1922. However, it was Harry Colt’s 1936 redesign that elevated Hankley to greatness, enhancing its spacious heathland allure across 164 acres, part of an expansive 850-acre property.
The course now spans a challenging 6,909 yards from the new “Purple” back tees, hosting prestigious events like Regional Qualifying for The Open since 1984. Its par threes, notably the 7th and 11th, present enjoyable tests, while the formidable opening and closing par fours exceed 400 yards.
Recently, architects Mackenzie & Ebert completed the second phase of a course upgrade project, collaborating with shaper Quinn Thompson and the club’s greenkeeping team. The ongoing enhancements aim to further refine Hankley’s already esteemed golfing experience.
For golfers seeking a memorable and expansive challenge amidst natural beauty, Hankley Common promises true greens and a rewarding round.
