Swinley Forest Golf Club

Overview

Swinley Forest Golf Club, designed by Harry Colt and opened in 1909, exudes a unique charm on the Surrey/Berkshire sand belt. Initially seen as frozen in time, it evolved over the years to embrace more conventional golfing structures while retaining its distinctive character. Once exclusive and eccentric, it has transitioned to accommodate societies and green fee visitors, fostering a more vibrant atmosphere.

Founded by Lord Stanley due to dissatisfaction with Sunningdale, Swinley Forest occupies a serene corner of Windsor Great Park. Colt, its designer, modestly described it as his “least bad course,” yet its ambiance and unpretentious nature have made it stand out. The club’s history, primarily oral among members, gained formal recognition in the 1990s with organised competitions and printed scorecards.

Renowned for its picturesque heathland setting, Swinley Forest combines challenging play with aesthetic allure. Recent updates have extended its length to 6,400 yards, maintaining a par of 69 to challenge golfers of all skill levels. The course features crafty greens, meandering through mature pines and swathes of purple heather, defining the classic heathland golf experience.

Despite its evolution and accessibility, Swinley Forest retains an old-world charm, offering an unforgettable golfing experience steeped in history and natural beauty along the London sandbelt.
