The Berkshire Golf Club (Blue)

Overview

The Berkshire Golf Club, crafted by Herbert Fowler in 1928, features both the Red and Blue courses, each offering a distinct golfing experience. The Red course, longer and unconventional with a unique mix of par threes, fours, and fives, contrasts with the Blue course’s more traditional layout of four par threes, three par fives, and eleven par fours, creating a par 71 challenge.

Fowler’s mastery integrates natural beauty with strategic design, evident across both courses. The Blue course, set on slightly flatter terrain than its sibling, opens with a demanding par three in front of the clubhouse, setting a challenging tone. Despite shorter par fives, the course’s character shines through in its closing series of formidable par fours, demanding precision and strategic play.

The Berkshire’s appeal lies not just in its layout but also in its serene surroundings, akin to other renowned heathland courses like Sunningdale and Walton Heath. It has hosted prestigious tournaments and earned acclaim from golfing experts like Bernard Darwin for its charm and natural splendor, setting it apart from more imposing courses.

Recent efforts led by Tim Lobb’s design firm have rejuvenated bunkers and enhanced landscapes on both courses, preserving Fowler’s original vision while ensuring a timeless and captivating golf experience in the Berkshire’s undulating and picturesque setting.
