Worplesdon Golf Club

Overview

Worplesdon Golf Club, nestled among Surrey’s heath and heather, stands out as part of the esteemed trio alongside West Hill and Woking. Designed by John Abercromby in 1908 with contributions from Willie Park Junior on greens and bunkers, Worplesdon offers a captivating golfing experience.

Measuring just under 6,500 yards, Worplesdon prioritises accuracy over length, challenging golfers with strategic bunkering and undulating terrain. The front nine navigates through rolling landscape, presenting golfers with varied stances, while the back nine offers more even ground, yet demands careful attention on the fast, subtly contoured greens.

The club’s rich history includes the annual Mixed Foursomes competition since 1921, where golf legends like Joyce Wethered shined alongside various partners, as noted by Bernard Darwin. The 520-yard par five 11th hole, highlighted in the 500 World’s Greatest Golf Holes, epitomises Worplesdon’s strategic brilliance amidst picturesque heathland.

Renovations overseen by Lobb & Partners culminated in 2021, enhancing the course’s landscape and bunkers, including the iconic horseshoe bunker on the 13th hole. Tim Lobb praised the club’s commitment to restoration, reflecting its forward-thinking vision and dedication to preserving Worplesdon’s charm.

Playing at Worplesdon is a privilege marked by serene surroundings, springy fairways adorned with mature trees, and vibrant heather providing both visual allure and golfing challenge. The clubhouse, known for its warmth and hospitality, complements the elegant golfing experience, ensuring a memorable visit for golf enthusiasts.
