Hollinwell

Overview

Hollinwell, known as the course of the Notts Golf Club, is steeped in historical and natural charm. Founded in 1887, the club moved to its current location in 1901, where Willie Park Junior originally laid out the course. Subsequent modifications, including bunker enhancements by Tom Williamson and John H Taylor, have shaped its current layout. The course features undulating terrain with fairways winding through wooded hillsides, heather, fern, and gorse-filled valleys, creating a blend of heathland, moorland, and woodland atmospheres.

Central to Hollinwell’s allure is its association with natural features like the holy well near the 8th fairway, believed to fortify golfers, particularly in summer. The course spans over 7,000 yards, making it a formidable challenge suitable for professional tournaments. Notable events include the 1970 John Player Classic, won by Christy O’Connor Senior, which boasted a record prize at the time.

In recent years, Notts Golf Club has embarked on a meticulous restoration project to revive its original heathland characteristics. This initiative involves selective tree removal, heather restoration, gorse management, and enhancing fine grasses, guided by agronomy experts to ensure sustainable improvement.
