Sherwood Forest Golf Club, located amidst the legendary Sherwood Forest in England, holds significant historical and ecological importance. Originally founded in 1895 as Mansfield Golf Club, it transitioned to Sherwood Forest Golf Club in 1911 and relocated to heathland at Eakring Road, designed by Harry Colt. James Braid later revised the layout in the 1920s, with subsequent enhancements in the early 1980s by architects Cotton, Pennink, Steel, and Hawtree.
Today, Sherwood Forest Golf Club is recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its expansive low-lying heathland, the largest in the Midlands. Over the years, the course has evolved as trees matured, creating a more enclosed atmosphere on the back nine, contrasting with the open, heathland character of the front holes. It’s renowned for its challenging layout and excellent greens, having hosted Open Championship Regional Qualifying.
