Troon Golf Club, established in 1878, has a rich history dating back to its humble beginnings as a five-hole course. Originally designed by Charlie Hunter, with later modifications by George Strath, Willie Fernie, and James Braid, it gradually evolved into the prestigious Royal Troon Golf Club. Despite being overshadowed by its renowned neighbour Prestwick, Troon gained recognition, especially after hosting its first Open Championship in 1923.
Troon’s layout features an out-and-back links style, offering picturesque views of the Firth of Clyde and distant landmarks like Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. With a championship length of 7,208 yards, precision is crucial due to numerous hidden bunkers and challenging rough. Notable holes include the lengthy 6th and the iconic “Postage Stamp” 8th, where Gene Sarazen achieved a legendary hole-in-one at the age of 71 during the 1973 Open.
Minor adjustments by Mackenzie & Ebert, along with significant changes to select holes, were made for The 145th Open in 2016. These alterations enhanced the course’s challenge and visual appeal. As the venue for the 2024 Open Championship, Troon continues its legacy in hosting prestigious golf tournaments, commemorating over a century of golfing excellence.
