The Irvine Golf Club‘s current layout is heavily influenced by James Braid’s design work in 1926, solidifying its reputation as a premier venue for national events, including Open Qualifying rounds for the championships at Royal Troon and Turnberry. The course, of medium length, features five par fours exceeding 400 yards, starting with a challenging opening hole. Accuracy is essential, particularly on the shorter par fours at the 4th and 5th, where gorse and heather frame the fairways.
The back nine opens with “Braid,” a 373-yard par four, followed by the longest hole, the 465-yard “Grandstand,” named for the remnants of a grandstand from the nearby Bogside Racecourse. The 12th tee offers stunning views of Arran, while the back nine features challenging holes, including the 16th par three with a demanding cross-bunker carry. Notably, Irvine Golf Club has produced three Scottish Amateur Champions, highlighting its quality and appeal as a destination in the beautiful South West Coast of Scotland. The club also hosted the Women’s Home Internationals in 2009.
