Littlestone Golf Club
(Championship)

Overview

Founded in 1888, Littlestone Golf Club is a quintessential remote links course, beautifully situated on the edge of the Romney Marshes, with the stunning English Channel serving as a picturesque backdrop. Just six years after its inception, Littlestone hosted the British Women’s Open, marking its significance in the golfing world. Originally designed by Laidlaw Purves, the course underwent refinements by renowned architects James Braid at the turn of the 20th century and Alister MacKenzie in the 1920s. Post-World War II, Frank Pennink made modifications to the bunkers, while Donald Steel and Peter Alliss provided guidance on minor changes in 2000.

Despite being surrounded by more famous links courses like Rye, Royal St George’s, and Royal Cinque Ports, Littlestone is often regarded as a hidden gem. The course meanders across relatively flat links terrain, punctuated by its own unique sand dunes. Located in New Romney, one of the driest areas in the British Isles, players can often leave their waterproof gear behind, as rain is a rare occurrence.

Littlestone prides itself on its straightforward design; everything is visible from the tees, including numerous strategically placed bunkers. To maintain a good score, golfers must bring their A-game, especially as they approach the challenging last three holes, which are among the toughest in the region.

At Littlestone, the pace of play is designed to keep rounds to about three hours. Traditionally, the club allowed only singles, two-balls, and foursomes, but it now permits limited four-ball play. Overall, Littlestone Golf Club is a remarkably enjoyable course that is well worth experiencing, especially for those feeling adventurous enough to tackle it from the medal tees. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer, Littlestone promises a memorable round of golf in a stunning setting.
