East Devon Golf Club

Overview

East Devon Golf Club, perched 400 feet above the sea on England’s south coast, offers breathtaking views over Lyme Bay and, on clear days, the Isle of Portland. This stunning heathland course, with its fairways winding through gorse and heather, creates an idyllic and spacious golfing experience.

Established in 1902 by Robert Tosswill, with later contributions from renowned designers like James Braid, Herbert Fowler, and Harry Colt, East Devon has a rich history of development and refinement. The course now stretches a little over 6,200 yards with a par of 70, blending challenging drives with memorable holes.

The 9th hole is famed for the longest recorded drive of 450 yards in 1934, while the 10th and 16th holes boast remarkable views across the landscape. Peter Alliss praised the vista from the 16th tee as “the best view in golf.” With its natural beauty and demanding layout, East Devon may not be a championship course, but it offers a delightful challenge for golfers of all abilities.

East Devon remains a hidden gem, celebrated for its elegance and immersive golfing experience. In 2019, Frank Pont began developing a restoration plan to ensure this captivating course continues to enchant players.
