Fancourt (Montagu)

Overview

German entrepreneur Hasso Plattner, co-founder of SAP, significantly updated the Fancourt golfing complex in 1994. Nestled between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Fancourt’s three outstanding courses are accessible to hotel residents and Country Club members with their guests.

The Montagu course, originally a 27-hole layout, became an 18-hole course and underwent major upgrades in 2005 by David McLay Kidd. This included new 1st and 9th holes, redefined bunkers and greens, and revised water features, enhancing the course’s appeal within the undulating landscape.

Maintained to an exceptionally high standard, the Montagu course, with its diverse trees and water features, is highly ranked among South African courses. While The Links at Fancourt often garners the most praise, the Montagu remains a formidable and enjoyable course.

The Montagu course closed for further upgrades from April to September 2018. During this period, the greens were resurfaced with bent grass, and design changes were planned with input from Gary Player. These changes aimed to enhance both the challenge and playability of the course. Water features were emphasised to increase difficulty, while adjustments to bunkering and fairway landing areas improved playability for average golfers. Additional modifications, including opening and cleaning water features and adding Cape Country flower beds, aimed to restore the traditional parkland feel of the Montagu and Outeniqua courses.
