Fancourt (Outeniqua)

Overview

The impressive Fancourt golf complex began in 1990 with an initial 27 holes. By 1997, nine more holes were added, creating the Montagu and Outeniqua courses. The Links opened in 2000, followed by the now-closed Bramble Hill course in 2001. Nestled between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Fancourt’s three courses are available to hotel residents and Country Club members with their guests.

The 18-hole Outeniqua course, named after the “land of milk and honey,” boasts meticulously maintained fairways bordered by charming white-walled, thatched-roof villas. The course layout features a mix of old and new holes, starting with two original holes, moving through nine new ones, and returning to the original design at the 12th hole.

Several holes vie for the title of signature hole, including the picturesque 4th, the ingeniously designed 5th, the downhill par-three 7th, and the challenging par-five 11th. However, the walk from the 11th hole to the par-three 12th tee is often cited as the most memorable view on the course.

While The Links is now Fancourt’s premier course, the Outeniqua remains a top contender on any list of must-play South African golf courses. A visit to the Western Cape should include a stay at the Fancourt Hotel to experience all three exceptional courses.
