Gullane is a town deeply rooted in golf, boasting five exceptional courses, including the renowned Muirfield. The Gullane No.1 course, established in 1884, is the oldest of three courses at Gullane Golf Club. Historical records from 1650 mention golf being played on these links, but the original designer of No.1 remains unknown, often attributed to Mother Nature.
Gullane No.1 is celebrated for its exceptional turf, negating the need for winter rules. Players can expect perfect lies on the fairways year-round. The course starts with a gentle short par four, “First,” followed by “Windygate,” beginning the ascent up Gullane Hill. The 3rd hole, “Racecourse,” is a short par five tracing an 18th-century racecourse, leading up to the 7th tee at the 200-foot summit of Gullane Hill.
The panoramic views from the 7th tee are stunning, offering a 360-degree vista of the surrounding landscape, including the Lammermuir Hills and the Firth of Forth. The downhill drive from this point is a highlight, adding to the course’s charm.
Gullane No.1 is a top-tier course, known for its varied uphill and downhill shots, which are unusual for a links course. It has hosted significant events, including the Open Championship Final Qualifying and the Scottish Open in 2015 and 2018, where Rickie Fowler and Brandon Stone emerged victorious.
