Hesketh Golf Club

Overview

Hesketh Golf Club, founded in 1885 as Southport Golf Club, boasts a rich history preceding its more renowned neighbours, Royal Lytham & St Annes and Royal Birkdale. Situated near Hesketh Park in Southport, the course was redesigned multiple times due to land developments and enhancements by notable architects like George Lowe, Charles Mackenzie, and Fred Hawtree.

The course features notable holes, including the renowned par three 16th, praised by Henry Cotton as Lancashire’s best. Playing 187 yards from the back tees, it challenges golfers with six pot bunkers guarding the green, framed by dunes and set on a tricky plateau.

Hesketh Golf Club hosts Open Championship Qualifying during Royal Birkdale’s Open events, emphasising its status as a challenging venue. Despite its storied past and tough layout, Hesketh remains relatively overlooked compared to its illustrious neighbours, offering a unique and demanding golfing experience.
