The Ayrshire coastline is home to a plethora of exceptional links courses, with Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club being one of the lesser-known gems. Located just a couple of miles north of Troon, across from Barassie railway station, this club was founded in 1887. Initially situated at Holmes Farm, the club moved to a more suitable, animal-free 123-acre site in 1894. The original course was designed by John Allan, the professional at Prestwick St Nicholas.
Over time, the course became outdated, prompting a redesign by Mathew M. Monie in 1931, which took four years to complete. The current layout includes nine new holes alongside nine from the original course, forming the Barassie course, used for Open Championship Final Qualifying. Measuring 6,817 yards with a par of 72, this course presents a significant challenge, requiring a range of skills to play to your handicap. Don’t overlook Kilmarnock on your way to Royal Troon; it’s a true test of golf!
