Luffness New Golf Club

Overview

Luffness New Golf Club, dating back to 1867, holds the distinction of possibly being the oldest “new” course globally. Originally a 17-hole layout, it transitioned to 18 holes by 1872 under the design expertise of Tom Morris. The course gained formal recognition in 1894 with a professional tournament, won by Ben Sayers. However, some discontent led to the formation of Kilspindie Golf Club four years later.

Situated on East Lothian‘s Gullane coast, Luffness New shares its golfing neighbourhood with renowned courses like Muirfield and Gullane. Despite its historical significance, it remains relatively unknown compared to its illustrious neighbours. Qualifying rounds for the Open at Muirfield are hosted here, showcasing its challenging layout and impeccable greens.

Measuring 6,502 yards, Luffness New offers a modest length but poses a challenge with its par 70. The course’s charm unfolds from the 6th tee onwards, featuring picturesque holes like the “Quarry” par three. Renowned for its pristine turf, described as akin to a rich Persian carpet, Luffness New offers a serene golfing experience in a quiet, private club setting, where a jacket and tie may be required for bar visits.
