Old Head Golf Links

Overview

A team effort led by Dr. Joe Carr, Paddy Merrigan, Ron Kirby, the late Eddie Hackett, Liam Higgins, and Haulie O’Shea brought Old Head Golf Links to life in 1997 on a narrow headland extending two miles into the Atlantic Ocean.

Old Head Golf Links is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking settings for golf globally. Perched on cliffs 300 feet above the Atlantic, it offers panoramic views where the ocean crashes against rocks and seagulls glide below. The course demands precision; straying off the fairways that hug the cliff edges can result in lost balls, with warnings not to venture for them due to the treacherous terrain.

The peninsula carries a storied history, with tales of shipwrecks including the Lusitania sunk by a German torpedo in 1915 nearby. The layout features memorable holes like the challenging par five 17th, named “Lighthouse,” requiring strategic play along cliffs leading to a punchbowl green. The par five 18th, played from the high back tee, provides a dramatic finish.

Old Head is a must-experience course, where each hole presents a unique challenge amidst its stunning coastal backdrop and historical intrigue.
