St George’s Hill Golf Club, nestled within the Surrey/Berkshire sand belt, is one of the most picturesque and esteemed heathland courses in the region. Established in 1913, the course was designed by the renowned architect Harry Colt. Unique among the area’s courses, St George’s Hill features a sweeping, undulating terrain that Colt masterfully integrated into his design.
The club originally boasted a 36-hole complex, but today it comprises three nine-hole loops: Red, Blue, and Green. The main course combines the Red and Blue loops, while the Green nine is shorter. From the clubhouse, golfers are treated to a stunning panorama that ignites excitement and anticipation for the round ahead.
The opening hole is a 384-yard par four, beginning from an elevated tee with a drive down to a valley, followed by a steep uphill approach to a welcoming green. The second hole is a challenging 458-yard par four, demanding a blind drive and a difficult approach over a stream to a raised green. The course continues to impress with memorable holes, particularly its par threes, and lacks any weak spots.
In recent years, the club has made efforts to restore its Colt heritage. In 2015, Tim Lobb was engaged to produce a design policy report, resulting in the reconstruction of the first green, restoration of original Colt bunkers, and further enhancements to twelve holes. In 2023, Renaissance Golf Design, led by Brian Schneider, was appointed to create a new master plan for all twenty-seven holes, ensuring that St George’s Hill remains a top-tier golfing destination.
