Peter Matkovich, a leading South African golf architect, designed the Steenberg course in the mid-1990s with a focus on integrating with the land. At Steenberg, he created a stream to manage mountain runoff, which influences play on several holes.
The course is part of a historic estate featuring a 17th-century wine farm, hotel, and residential properties. It winds through the Steenberg vineyards, transitioning from pine-forested parkland to wetlands and then to a heathland section with waste bunkers, before returning to parkland. Notable holes include the par four 3rd with a backdrop of Silvermine Mountain, and the 7th, 9th, and 12th holes.
Key par threes on each nine stand out: the 181-yard 7th hole has an elevated green surrounded by a lake, and the 203-yard 14th hole features one of the largest greens in the country, encircled by large bunkers.
Steenberg is renowned for its exceptional bent grass greens and lush kikuyu fairways through the vineyards, offering one of the Western Cape‘s most picturesque and enjoyable golf experiences.
