Sunningdale Golf Club (Old)

Overview

Sunningdale‘s Old Course, a gem among British Isles’ inland courses, opened in 1901. Designed by Willie Park Junior, this historic course is set on the Surrey/Berkshire sand-belt and leased from St John’s College, Cambridge. It became known as the Old Course after the New Course debuted in 1923. The course, adorned with pine, birch, and oak trees, features the club’s emblematic oak tree next to the 18th green. Initially barren, Harry Colt’s redesign introduced a more intimate, enclosed feel, enhancing its natural beauty.

Key holes include the elevated 10th tee, known for its challenging drive and the charming halfway hut behind the green. The 5th hole, a picturesque par four, requires precision with its heather-bordered fairway and forest, demanding two perfect shots. The 15th hole, a challenging 226-yard par three, is equally impressive.

Sunningdale is often hailed as an ideal golfing destination. The Old and New Courses together are regarded as one of the finest pairs of golf courses. Playing on the pristine heathland turf at Sunningdale offers an unparalleled experience for golf enthusiasts.
