The Island Golf Club, originally accessible only by ferry, remains a hidden gem nestled on a peninsula-like stretch of links land between the Irish Sea, Donabate Beach, and the Broadmeadow Estuary. Founded in 1890 by ten Irishmen known as the “Syndicate,” it required a ferryman to cross the estuary from Malahide for a round of golf, signalling their return with a distinctive red and white disc.
Over its history, the course has seen revisions by notable architects including Fred W. Hawtree, Eddie Hackett, and Martin Hawtree. Renowned for its challenging winds and impeccable greens, The Island features standout holes like the signature 13th, a daunting par three over 220 yards with a strategic beach challenge.
Hosting prestigious tournaments like the Irish Open qualifiers and the European Youths Amateur Team Championship underscores its status among Dublin’s premier links courses. Recent enhancements by Mackenzie & Ebert, including bunker redesigns and new hole configurations like the 4th and revamped 8th, have preserved its character while modernising playability.
The Island Golf Club remains a cherished destination for golf enthusiasts seeking an authentic links experience amid Dublin‘s rich golfing heritage.
