Just south of Padstow, along the Atlantic at Constantine Bay lies Trevose Golf and Country Club, known for its breathtaking views over Booby’s Bay and Trevose Head. Established in 1926, the Championship course at Trevose was designed by the legendary Harry Colt, with minor revisions by Sir Guy Campbell before World War II. This windswept links course is challenging, with only dune grasses surviving the harsh conditions.
Trevose offers a stern test of golf, particularly when the wind picks up. It features four teeing areas, and the par 72 (73 for ladies) course extends to 7,172 yards from the back tees. The wide fairways and short rough help maintain the pace of play, though the course is technically demanding, evidenced by its record score of 66. While some view Trevose as holiday golf, its challenging nature tests even the best golfers. Birdie opportunities on the three short par fives are balanced by five par fours over 400 yards, making it a comprehensive test.
Memorable holes include the 166-yard 3rd and the 199-yard 11th, with its two-tiered green. The picturesque par five 4th, revamped in 2016 by Mackenzie and Ebert, now features new tees, bunkers, and an undulating green, enhancing its play to match its stunning backdrop. Recent renovations continued through 2018, improving several holes with bunker modifications and habitat rejuvenation.
Trevose boasts excellent facilities, including a pleasant nine-hole course designed by Peter Alliss, offering a perfect warm-up before tackling the main Championship challenge.
