Wallasey Golf Club

Overview

Wallasey Golf Club, situated on the Wirral Peninsula overlooking the River Mersey, boasts a storied history dating back to 1891 when Old Tom Morris designed the original layout. The club gained prominence through Dr. Frank Stableford, who devised the Stableford scoring system here in 1898. James Braid’s modifications in 1929 and 1930, including the addition of fifty new bunkers, enhanced the challenge and strategic play of the course. Donald Steel later redesigned three holes in 2003 to adapt to landscape changes.

Known for its engaging layout, Wallasey features raised plateau greens and elevated tees across its 6,500-yard length from the back tees. The course has hosted Open Championship Qualifying, notably in 1930 when Bobby Jones qualified before winning the Open at nearby Hoylake. With a blend of historical significance, challenging terrain, and scenic views, Wallasey continues to attract golfers seeking a rewarding links experience in England’s northwest.
