West Sussex Golf Club

Overview

Golf at West Sussex offers a delightful experience on a picturesque, undulating sandy outcrop at the northern edge of the South Downs. Established in 1930, the course was envisioned by Commander G.W. Hillyard and brought to life by architects Sir Guy Campbell, Major C.K. Hutchison, and Colonel S.V. Hotchkin. Their design harmonises beautifully with the natural landscape, creating a course both aesthetically pleasing and challenging.

Though relatively short at 6,355 yards from the tiger tees, West Sussex is deceptive. After the opening par 5, which provides a rare birdie opportunity, golfers face seven par 4s exceeding 400 yards. Strategic play and precision are essential to meet the challenges presented by the layout.

The course winds through stunning woodlands featuring oak, silver birch, and pine trees, complemented by vibrant heather and thoughtfully placed bunkers. In autumn, the landscape comes alive with breathtaking colours, adding to its charm.

Each hole demands careful consideration, offering a variety of challenges. Among them, the 6th hole stands out—a 224-yard downhill par three with a pond just 40 yards from the green. This water hazard, originally out-of-bounds, adds tension to the shot, showcasing the architects’ creativity.

West Sussex Golf Club seamlessly blends beauty and difficulty, providing an unforgettable round for golfers of all levels within a truly enchanting natural setting.
