Western Gailes Golf Club

Overview

Western Gailes Golf Club, nestled between Irvine Bay and railway tracks in Ayrshire, was established in 1897 by four golf enthusiasts tired of muddy parkland courses. Its layout, initially designed by Mr. F. Morris on land leased from the Duke of Portland, underwent later modifications, including work by Tom Simpson and Fred W. Hawtree in the 1970s.

The course layout is unique, with the clubhouse centrally located. Nine holes head north parallel to the railway, nine return south along the coastline, and the final five head back north. The undulating fairways, intersected by burns, lead to fast, contoured greens often guarded by natural features like dunes.

Western Gailes offers a challenging test, measuring 6,714 yards, and has hosted prestigious events like the Curtis Cup and the PGA Championship. Recent renovations by Mackenzie & Ebert focus on bunkering adjustments and tee positions to enhance playability for all skill levels.
